How to Use Our Site

There are a few different types of information on this site and it may not be easy to find what you are interested in. Of course, you can go to the main menu and search through it until you find what you are looking for. However, we have built in some shortcuts to make access to the most important items a bit easier.

  1. The family tree, or trees. These are most easily found in the header at the very top right of all windows. You can choose to start with Betty and trace back the Rutherfords or start with Judd and trace back the Brehauts. The family trees are also a good way to get an overview of all the material associated with an individual or a family. Once you have selected an individual, click on the Individual tab and scroll down to see the complete list, no matter what collection the material may be in.

  2. Histories. Histories focus on what we know or have found out about our ancestors. They are usually the result of research which may include canvassing sources to see where they agree. In these, we try to be objective about the events and people. You can also easily access them at the top right.

  3. Stories. These are individual accounts by family members about what they remember or think they do about their lives or those in them. While memories may not be always accurate or objective, these stories will be a rich source for understanding what the writer's life, whether "back in the day" or in the present day, was like. These stories can also be easily accessed at the top right. Stories about their lives shared by someone from one of the four basic branches of our extended family are accessible by clicking on the links under the Looking Backward & Forward section of the home page. Stories consist of a variety of formats, including links to other sites.

  4. Documents. These are scanned copies of official and other documents that we or those who are labouring on our behalf have found and think are of sufficient interest to post here, in other words, all of them! You can find a link to those at the very bottom of all windows in the footer.

  5. Photos and Videos. We continue to build our photo and video collection. The photos may have been collected by Betty throughout her life including ones she inherited from her parents or ones that have been discovered through other forms of research. Of course, each photo needs to be scanned and processed before it is uploaded here, so it is an ongoing project. So too the videos, Judd's home movies, of which there are almost 75 to scan. That is an even bigger project. To access those, you can go to the main menu and select Media then Videos, or at the bottom of the window, click on All Media.

  6. Links. With some images, the detail we are interested in is small compared to the overall image. With these images, click on the caption and it will take you to another page where the image is presented in a larger format. To make it easier for you, captions with links are coloured blue. At the bottom of theenlarged image or images there is a link to take you back to the original page where you can continue reading.

  7. Bookmarks. Over time, at least we hope, we will have a great deal of information that you might have to sift through before you find what you are looking for. Once you find it, you might want to be able to go back to it quickly from time to time. This is where our site bookmarks come in. All pages except the Home Page show a bookmark link in the menu bar toward the right side. Click on this and a bookmark gets added, which is saved locally to your computer or device. You can access these bookmarks through the Find menu list.

If you come here often to browse, you will of course be interested in What's New. There is also a link in the main menu under Info or in the bottom left corner of the window.

From the Managing Editor

We are always looking for new information, but we are careful about documenting the research to be presented here. If you have something to contribute, whether a document, a photo, or a story, please contact the editors. --- Jon
