I remember as a child, Grannie (Dora Rutherford) used to send us for Christmas what seemed like gallons of pure maple syrup in plain metal cans and maple sugar blocks the size of a butter brick. We used to pour maple syrup into a cereal bowl, get a bunch of slices of bread (plain white in those days) and sit down to consume it. We'd dip pieces of bread in the syrup and eat it. Of course the quantity of bread never matched to quantity of syrup. So when we finished up one, we would get more because we didn't want to waste what was left of the other. Example, get more bread to finish up the syrup, but wouldn't you know it, the syrup ran out before the bread, so we'd have to get more syrup to finish up the bread. This back and forth probably went on until Mum called a halt or we got stuffed. Thinking of all that, it is a wonder we don't all have diabetes.
